A few years after graduation, including a year in the UK, I got a job where I wanted to be , right in Mona Vale in it’s original dental practice. Soon after, I was able to buy that practice and begin really begin fulfilling my dream; to break the image of suburban dentistry being “ordinary” and provide a centre of excellence right here on the Northern Beaches. This would enable me to practice the quality of dentistry I aspired to, without having to travel into the city specialist practices. So I just hoped enough local residents were willing to pay a little more for exceptional dentistry. Post graduate training was already a habit. It kept me busy and continues to do so. When the premises was found, I had to sell up my beloved beach house to create a world class premises from the ground up, but it was worth it. Importantly, I have also been able to attract a special team who care about people and care about doing things properly. Without them, it simply wouldn’t happen. No one can do it all. Committed, caring people are hard to find these days and I am very lucky. So I consider myself fortunate to continue to realise my professional goals, but I have to admit work and study have got in the way of as much surfing as I had hoped.. I will always be a very ordinary surfer ! Outside work I am blessed with a gorgeous, tolerant wife, three spirited and rather noisy sons and a darker affliction for speed and small fast cars. In 2006, I was asked to start up the NSW branch of the National Dental Foundation, a national charity which provides treatment for drug and alcohol rehabilitation patients outside the bounds of the limited public dentistry available. Yes, I’m giving, but it is truly heartwarming making a difference to these brave people reclaiming their lives, their potential, and often their families. And I am proud to be part of a profession so willing to give in this way as so many of my colleagues have joined me in donating over $2,000,000 in dental care since then.
